The influence mechanism of search selection on new product development performance

Abstract: New product development is increasingly becoming a key factor for new ventures to maintain their competitive advantage. However, existing research rarely explores whether and how search selection affect new product development performance. To this end, the article uses 203 new ventures as a sample, and builds a mechanism for the impact of search selection on new product development performance from the perspective of resource-induced coping heuristics(RICH) and industry experience. The findings are as follows: extra-industry search has a positive impact on the performance of new product development, and unfamiliar search has no effect on it; The RICH plays a full mediating role in extra-industry search and new product development performance; Industry experience negatively moderates the relationship between extra-industry search and new product development performance, that is, the richer the industry experience, the less beneficial it is to search for information and knowledge from extra-industry to promote new product development. The research conclusions are of great significance for entrepreneurs to overcome the loss of resources and improve the performance of new product development by searching extra-industry.
