Abstract: This paper aims to explore the identity and strategies adopted by university incubator managers which highly impact to the performances of incubators. This paper argues that as an organizational form of academic entrepreneurship, the managers who in charge of university incubators can also be regarded as a kind of academic entrepreneurs. Thus, we employ the method of most-similar cases to unfold the “black box” of “identity”. Firstly, we reveal that there are 3 kinds identity of university incubator managers, which are entrepreneurs, servicers and researchers. What’s more, we find out the reciprocal interaction between identities and institutional environments, that is, identities are not only the consequences of legitimation, but also strategic processes to deal with legitimacy pressures. Lastly, we explore the circulation of reform and adjustment to identities is matter to the “punctuated equilibrium” of institutional change. Therefore, this paper appeal for rethinking the policies of university incubator to activating the system of identity, as well as concerns about managers and management strategies in innovation intermediaries to enriching our policy knowledge.
